The Future of Shopping
Imagine this situation: you’re at home, and just found out you’re out of
milk. Just open the app, and with a click of a button, in a short while, a
drone will land with the missing groceries. This is probably the future
according to Amazon, which took a very big step in this direction this
weekend. Thirteen billion and seven hundred million dollars, almost fifty
billion NIS, is the imaginary sum the electronic commerce conglomerate
Amazon paid for the organic food chain Whole Foods. This announcement
managed to amaze the business world; though Amazon allows ordering
fresh food to (your) home even today, [but] despite its power it hasn’t been
able to take over this market. Purchasing Whole Foods, which has four
hundred and sixty branches in the United States, Canada and the UK, can
make the difference. And maybe the Whole Foods chain branches are the
ones that will make the future of a register-free market. This store for
instance, in Seattle, already works with no registers at all. The smart store
identifies which product exactly (you) take off the shelf, and it’s
immediately added to the shopping list. Yes, so after the books, fashion
and electronics, Amazon is now taking over our supermarket purchases as
well. But until we’ll be able to order here in Israel via drone, quite a bit of
time will probably pass.
