The Blood Libel that was Prevented

The ruler opened the bottle and smelled [it]. He shrugged his

shoulders and gave the bottle to the convert. The convert also

smelled it, but a good smell of wine rose from the bottle. “I don’t

understand, I don’t understand”, he mumbled.

The ruler wanted to understand what happened. The convert

admitted what he had done, but the ruler was very angry and decided

to punish him. The ruler asked forgiveness from the Jews, and

promised he will never believe those who would say bad things about

the Jews.

That Saturday night they didn’t do Havdalah in the synagogue. When

the beadle told the Rabbi about the miracle that had happened, the

Rabbi decided that they won’t let in any more wine into the

synagogue. Since then, they never did Kiddush and Havdalah in the

synagogue.
