Ethnic Groups in Nachlaot
Israel is a country with a very varied population. It has a mosaic of people. Over
the years, Jews from throughout the world have come to Israel. Each ethnic group
in Israel has its own tradition, different accent, special customs, and different food.
The neighborhood of Nachlaot is like Israel in microcosm. People from every
ethnic group came to Nachlaot. They built streets, homes, and synagogues.
Today, many young people live in Nachlaot. In every area in the neighborhood you
can find people of all ethnic groups. Yet, it is still possible to see the older residents
preserving their tradition: praying in their synagogues, cooking their food, and
speaking with their accents.
On our tour of Nachlaot, we will meet the Yemenite, Kurd, Syrian, and Ashkenazi
ethnic groups (communities).
