Shaul Tchernichovsky
Shaul Tchernichovsky was born in Russia in 1875. He was one of
the most important and beloved Hebrew poets. After having
studied at a government school of commerce, he decided that he
wants to be a doctor and went to study medicine in Switzerland.
But Tchernichovsky had another side to (his) personality, a side
of muse, (artistic) creation and poetry.
Over the course of his studies he began writing poems. He
practiced medicine for his whole life: during World War I in
Europe and afterwards at the schools in Tel Aviv. Along with his
work as a physician, he had written many poems and translated a
lot of plays from different languages into Hebrew.
He loved Israel’s culture dearly, and especially loved the
character of King Saul of the Bible, and also wrote a famous poem
about his tragic story: “Saul in Ein Dor.”
Along with Israel’s culture, he particularly loved Greek culture
and so moved to [live in] Jerusalem, at the Greek Patriarch’s
house near the San Simon Monastery. He passed away in 1943
and was buried in Tel Aviv. He left behind many well-known and
beloved poems, sonatas and plays.
