Moving from Present Tense to Past Tense

In Pa’al 3, the easiest way to get to the past tense “kernel” is by using
present tense form. For example:

‫ִל ְקנֹות ← קֹו ֶנה‬

We then change the sound pattern to match the name of the
Binyan – Pa’al:

...A...A...

To this basic “kernel” we add the corresponding suffixes, according to
the pronoun. As an example let’s use the verb:

to buy - ‫ִל ְקנֹות‬
‫ִל ְקנֹות ← קֹו ֶנה ← ָק ַנה‬

Pronoun  ‫ ּו‬ ‫ ה ֵהם‬ ‫ִהיא‬  ‫הּוא‬
Suffix ‫ָק ַנה‬
‫ּו‬+‫ ָתה * ָקנ‬+‫ָקנ‬ ‫ָק ַנה‬
Suffix  ‫** ָק ְנ ָתה * ָקנּו‬

*Notice what happens to the "‫ "ה‬at the end of the "kernel", as we add

different suffixes.

**For third person feminine – ‫היא‬, we usually use the form of third person,
masculine – ‫ הוא‬and add the suffix ‫ה‬. In this Binyan we insert the letter ‫ת‬
before the suffix ‫ה‬, because it is impossible to have two consecutive letters ‫ה‬.

For the second chart, we use a slightly different “kernel”:

Pronoun  ‫ ֶתם‬ ‫ַא ֶתם‬ ‫נּו‬ ‫ֲא ַנ ְחנּו‬ ‫ ְת‬ ‫ַא ְת‬ ‫ ָת‬ ‫ַא ָתה‬ ‫ ִתי‬ ‫ֲא ִני‬

Suffix  ‫ ֶתם‬+‫* ְק ִני‬ ‫נּו‬+‫ ְת ָק ִני‬+‫ָק ִני‬ ‫ ָת‬+‫ ִתי ָק ִני‬+‫ָק ִני‬

*Notice the slight difference for ‫ַא ֶתם‬
