Item #3 (Advanced Level)
A Teacher for Life
This morning, like every morning, Ilya woke up at five. He needs enough
time to get ready for the event. He’s not on his way to a wedding or a
sparkly premiere, he is only on his way to another day of work at school.
Every day he walks the five kilometers that separate his house from the
physics lab. This week his routine was a little broken. Through a message
from the office of the commander of the air force, he was told that he
would receive a certificate of appreciation after not fewer than ninety-one
of his graduates became pilots. And in each class, when the graduates of
the pilot course were asked which figure influenced them the most, one by
one they did not hesitate and answered: "Ilya the physics teacher." The
students already know that Ilya has high standards. Anyone who wants to
enter the kingdom must abide by strict rules of discipline. There is no
tardiness, no absences, no interruptions, no cutting corners. His class is
unlike anything you know. Long before we get to mechanics and
electromagnetism, [they] are updated on major events in Israel and around
the world. Next week he will appear at the air force base along with other
inspiring figures chosen by the pilots. He also emphasizes again and again
that for him the great achievement is not necessarily that they became
pilots: "The most exciting thing is that people leave here [as good]
people."
