Olmert Goes to Jail
Nothing was cracked by Ehud Olmert today. He remained courteous,
smiling, as if the Supreme Court didn't send him to jail for a year and a
half today, after deciding he had taken bribes. "Olmert abused his power
and senior public status for his own benefit", wrote Justice Jubran. The
former prime minister is going to jail, the Attorney General's office
emphasized, as if trying to belittle the legal drama, the one the five
Supreme Court justices issued, democratically deciding to acquit Olmert of
the main charge against him – receiving a bribe of about half a million
NIS, which state witness Dechner transferred to Olmert's brother Yossi,
who fell into financial distress and ran away from Israel. It seems that
more than anything (we) should take from this verdict the words of Justice
Neal Hendel, "The day when the one who held the highest office in the
country goes into jail, (on) that day, "let there be darkness"", quoted the
Justice from the book of Job.
