The Ultra-Orthodox Take to the Streets
The protest of the extremist ultra-orthodox paralyzed the entrance to
Jerusalem today for all hours of the afternoon. The police, prepared with
reinforcements, held its restraint and tried to disburse the demonstrations
in relative peace. When this wasn’t reciprocated by the other side, force
was used and riot control measures were taken. The ultra-orthodox protest
that started in the afternoon at the Knesset, collided with other
demonstrations, by the disabled and police retirees. In protest of the arrest
of forty six Yeshiva students who refused to report to the drafting office,
as well as according to them, due to the escalation in the police’s response.
But not only police officers are measured for their patience across from a
violent demonstration, property damage and even throwing of stones at
them, so are drivers and bystanders who happen to be at demonstration
locations and their schedule is disrupted. Either way, the police now stands
helpless against the expanding protest, as the top ranks of the extremist
Jerusalem Branch aren’t signaling that it’s nearing its end.
