                      Miri Regev’s Reform

Minister of Culture Miri Regev came to the Knesset’s committee of
education today, to lay out the revolution she is planning for the budgeting
method for cultural institutions, mainly the demand to deny budgeting to
institutions that break state laws with their artwork. According to the
articles Regev presented today, the Ministry of Culture will deny
budgeting from institutions for the following actions: negating the
existence of the state of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, incitement
to racism, violence and terror, noting Independence Day as a day of
mourning, and a vandalizing act of state symbols. The culture committee
also invited artist unions to the discussion, but they chose not to participate
in it; they presented different stands in the media. The discussion took on a
personal note as well when Knesset Member Elazar Stern from Yesh Atid
mocked Regev for naming the reform after herself, Regev’s Amendments.
Stern and Regev served in high ranking positions in the IDF during the
Disengagement, and apparently it didn’t really work between them already
back then. Even though it was launched with a fanfare, Regev’s reform
still has a long way to go.
