Voices from Faraway Countries

You can find many interesting things at the market, but the
biggest variety is of old carpets and furniture. Nowhere else
would you find such special carpets, handmade from faraway
countries like Persia, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. In these
countries the craft of carpet weaving passes from father to son,
up to the traders we see at the market today. When they speak
you can hear the different accents, and especially the strong
Persian accent. If you wander around the different carpet shops
for long enough you’ll learn to recognize it. The traders tend to
the carpets all day long: they mend them by hand, wash and dry
them on the cars in the street. If you arrive at the market one day
with a car and won’t be able to find it, it’s probably hiding under
a carpet…
The market is full of special furniture from the fifties, sixties
and seventies. In the past, people used to come buy second hand
furniture at the market because they didn’t have enough money
to buy new furniture. Today the furniture got a new name -
vintage, and now everybody wants to fill their home with this
old furniture.
