                           A Short Week

Most of us are already used to working at least five days a week, well beyond
from nine to five. But is change on its way now? The software conglomerate
Microsoft held a pilot over last August with the company’s two thousand
and three hundred employees in Japan. The work week was shortened to just
four days, the weekend extended from Friday to Sunday, pay remained the
same, so what changed? It wasn’t just Microsoft that gained from the move.
Ninety two percent of employees expressed (their) content, the number of
sick days used decreased, the company’s expenses on electricity decreased
by twenty three percent, and even the number of papers sent to be printed
was substantially cut down. The race for a livelihood and a career makes the
Japanese work long hours, which damages their private lives and for many,
has led to depression and mental health problems. Company executives all
over the world are more aware today of the importance of balance between
home and the workplace, and are looking for creative solutions for workers’
wellbeing. When will we get to see the change here? Unclear. According to
the OECD’s data, Israel comes in fifth from bottom in the balance between
private life and work, Japan is one slot underneath us.
