Marty Haviik: Austin, thank you very
much for this last-minute interview and
for sharing with us your story, your
music, and your thoughts about music
in general. Would you share how you got
started in music?
Austin Dixon: I’m not sure I could point to
the very first thing that got it started. My first
CD was ‘Paranoid’ by Black Sabbath and
my first concert was AC/DC when I was in
eighth grade. I had always loved music
even before that, though. When I was
young, I was fortunate to be raised around
a family that weren’t necessarily musicians
but were very music savvy. My parents
especially had a vested interest in a wide
variety of music. They would always put an
emphasis on the lyrics of the songs they
enjoyed, and I really enjoyed learning the
words to songs so that I could sing along to
them.
MH: I've heard that you're working on
new music. Share with us the good
news.
AD: Yes! This will be my first truly
representative work as a musician. You can
find three songs out there now with my
name on them, but the singing, songwriting,
guitar playing, and the budget have all
come a LONG way since then! This new
project, which will be called ‘O-Town,’ is a
collection of songs I have written over the
last few years. I’ve written a lot of music in
that time, but these five songs all have a
fairly similar theme of small-town
happenings. Some of them are directly
based on things that have happened in the
town of Oilton, Oklahoma, which is a very
small town where I have a lot of friends.
Oilton is where the name O-Town comes
from. I’m super excited about these songs.
For a while I thought that some of the songs
were too specific to things that have
happened in my life, but after testing these
songs out on the road, it seems like they are
much more relatable than I originally
thought. I cannot wait to get them out there
to the world!
