I guess social media can be a good thing. This is how I find new artists. I caught wind of these
country Coloradans on my news feed. So, after a few times appearing on my events page, I finally
went on their page to investigate. I liked what I read and saw, so on to their website! And, I loved
what I read there, too. Their music video “Burn Up The Highway” is what got me excited to see
them. So, I looked up the band’s schedule and I see that they’re in Tucson at the Thunder Canyon
Brewstillery…tomorrow! Free show! “Sign me up!” I told myself.
The day of the show, it was raining. I arrived at the brewery way before the band I think because
nothing was set up on stage. After a drink, the band came in, a few members at a time. I went up
to bass player, Susan Phelan, and we chatted a bit about sticking the band in ION Indie
Magazine. I asked, "When the band gets settled, I need 5 minutes of the band’s time.” With a
happy smile, "Sure!" she replied. I went and spoke briefly with each member. After a quick set
up, I stole the band and we snuck to the back of the brewery. We did a quick shoot just for fun
and then back to work for the band.
Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts have performed with many national acts including Dwight
Yoakam, Shooter Jennings, The Marshall Tucker Band, Jason Boland & The Stragglers,
Blackberry Smoke, and a few others. Opening for the band this night was Pamela Jean from
Seattle via Wyoming, MN. Currently on tour with Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts, Pamela Jean
performed her original music…or as she describes it “Earthy Country Music.”
After about a 30-minute set from Pamela Jean, Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts was up next. The
band is comprised of Ryan Chrys (guitars/vocals), Susan Phelan (bass), Lauren Michaels
(vocals), and Michael Jochum (drums). A little back story…I found out is that Michael was once
the touring drummer for the nu-metal band Korn. This band is full of surprises!
The band sounded just like I thought they would…outlaws with attitude, reminiscent of the country
version of Hank III. It was clear that these guys were up on stage to have a great time, laughing
and joking with the audience. They were a very personable group with Ryan at times sharing
some road stories.
Throughout the night, Ryan and Lauren took turns singing songs, which kept things fresh and
made the band even more enjoyable. The band performed for about an hour, maybe longer. Each
song was different and fun to listen to. I think it had to do with Ryan Chrys voice. If I close my
eyes, I can hear a little George Strait and maybe even a little Gary Alan, with a hint of Johnny
Cash…all coming from the stage.
Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts bring a brand-new energy to country music. I really loved the
raunchy guitar sound with a little flange stewing on the side, coupled with the deep fat bass
keeping tight with Michael's drumming…which kept people’s toes tapping. There were even some
folks dancing away! As much as the band moved around on stage, they never missed a note.
After their set, the band mingled with everyone. Ryan and I kept cheering our glasses together
after every new beer ordered. What I loved about this band was that it was apparent that they
truly enjoyed being with the people, giving each person their full attention.
