Then it happened. Boo! It was not “The Beach Boys.” It was more like “Mike Love’s
Beach Boys,” as he was the only original member in this band tour. I was really
disappointed inside, but I marched on.
Just like everyone around the world, the pandemic had an adverse effect on The
Beach Boys, who were forced to cancel their tour in 2020 and 2021. They had the
biggest tour of their career lined up, then COVID hit, and it all went away.
But that didn’t stop them from making music. They were able to record a song called
‘This Too Shall Pass.” Even though the members were unable to meet in-person,
they recorded their parts with microphones, computers, and phones. The Beach
Boys started the “Feel Flows World Tour” in May of 2021 and finally made it to
Tucson.
The Beach Boys was formed in 1961 and was founded on lyrics about romance,
California girls, and the beach life. As for the Tucson show, the band performed 37
classic hits starting with “Do It Again,” followed by “Surfin' Safari,” “Catch a Wave,”
“Hawaii,” and “California Sun.” Mike cracked a joke about Joey Ramone and The
Ramones stealing “Surfin' Safari,” a Beach Boys’ song, and recording it on their
album. So, Mike said that they were stealing a Ramones’ song -- so they performed
“Rockaway Beach.” It was a great song covered by The Beach Boys!
The set-list also included “God Only Knows,” which was sung originally by Carl
Wilson, who died in 1998 from lung cancer. Mike’s son, Christian Love, took over
the vocal duties and he did a great job on that song. It’s almost as if it was written
for him!
