For most bands, reaching the 50-year-old mark is a rare anomaly. Perhaps they are resigned to the
occasional gig or one-off. But to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2019, Nektar recorded a double album,
and in 2020, embarked on a 31-date North American tour, only to be shortened by the pandemic. Fast
forward to the summer of 2021: Nektar are once again preparing to tour.
Nektar is one of those bands that you either know or don't. They are the most underrated forefathers of
progressive music, sporting all the prog goodies with flowing textures, dramatic dynamics, and beautiful
harmonies. Nektar deserve their place alongside prog legends Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis and King Crimson.
The original band was a bunch of British expats who landed in Germany, and eventually hooked up with a
common vision of creating a sight and sound spectacular. The Germans loved it…and the rest is history.
The band, which moved to the States in the mid-Seventies, has been through many changes in 52 years
but has found a permanent home in the hearts of prog fans in the US and around the world.
Nektar is Derek ‘Mo’ Moore (bass, vocals), Ron Howden (drums, vocals), Mick Brockett (visual
environment), Ryche Chlanda (guitar, lead vocals), Randy Dembo (bass, 12-string guitar, bass pedals),
and Kendall Scott (keyboards).
Jay Petsko: For us Non-Nektarines, describe Nektar in one sentence.
Mo: Nektar is a progressive rock band that plays music and paints a picture of the music in concert: Music
and Light Theater.
