response to that commercial is because they see someone helping someone else out. Now I have the
opportunity to be the someone who might help someone else out. This is a new opportunity for me, and I want
to be able to rise to the occasion.

KP: Performing and road life can be a blur sometimes. Yet, there are “moments” that become etched in artists’
minds that they carry with them forever. Tell me about your favorite “fan” interaction and why it’s so
memorable to you.

AG: My new favorite fan interaction came very recently. Sometimes we play venues repeatedly and we often
have the pleasure of meeting regulars. A while back, a fan invited me and the band to party with him, but we all
chose to just hang out and talk. I’ve now met this fan 4-5 times and have had many conversations with him —
he’s been a little down on his luck and faced with some challenges. But just the other night, this guy’s father
told me I changed his son’s life. He’s now playing guitar, singing our songs, and moving forward in a more
positive manner and doing well. As a musician, you always hope your music (especially in this genre) will
resonate beyond a show. We want our music to affect people in a personal way, so knowing my music did that
and really changed someone for the better is tremendous.

KP: If you could reanimate someone who has already departed this Earth and then have one hour to talk with
them…who would that be and why? What would you want to know?

AG: Carl Sagan…because I think he’s such an interesting mind. He would truly be the best dinner guest
to learn from. There are plenty of people smarter than him, but he had this charisma that would draw
you in and get you excited to learn about whatever was on his mind that day. He was great at
recognizing we’re all insignificant, and our insignificance gives us a beautiful purpose because it means
you have actual power to change and influence people. Just make everyone you come in contact with
happier than they were when you found them and you’ll have a perfectly fulfilled existence.

KP: Thank you for doing this interview, Alex. In closing, what projects are you working on currently that you’d
like to share with the readers of ION Indie Magazine? Final thoughts?

AG: Currently, we are working on our first soul album, which I’m really excited about. We’re going to get to bring
in all the influences such as the Motown days, Southern soul days, and continue bringing it back because there
are just so many awesome artists — even in recent years — who have paved the way and allowed me to have a
career doing “non-mainstream” music. It’s amazing that we have this platform so we can actually make the
music we want to make. We are also touring more than ever, and finally getting to play at places we never
thought we’d play. There is such an element of luck in music that no matter how you do things, it still may not
pan out. We’re really fortunate, in the wake of this commercial, that we’re given opportunities we can actually
seize. We have people backing us up, enabling us to make the record we want to make, play the places we want
to play and go to the towns we want to visit. We’re actually able to pursue what we want to do instead of just
taking the best for now.
