Lufkin moved back home to Massachusetts to be closer to his dad. While playing the
bar scene, he found himself going down a bad path. “I was spending way too much time
drinking and partying. It was really getting in the way of my musical process. I had to do
something, so I went to detox.” Adam said detox was one of the best decisions he has
ever made. “I feel so much clearer about everything --especially my music. I get up in
the morning and go for a run or a bike ride. I have a vision of where I want to go and be
with my music now.”
The music Adam is focusing on creating now is more pop style with trap music
influences. Part of this musical styling is carrying over from another side project, Delano
Road, which is comprised of Lufkin and two rappers. He describes Delano Road as more
experimental, in line with the band Outkast.
When ION Indie Magazine asked Lufkin about his writing process, he said, “When I free
style, I come up with the vowels first. I catch a wave, and once I build off it, the rhyme
scheme develops.” Adam has tried many methods of organizing his lyrics -- from a desk
of sticky notes to a white board with lyrical concepts and plenty of voice memos on his
phone.
Between the sticky notes, voice memos, and white board, there are plenty of songs to
go around, which is good because Adam is playing a lot of solo gigs and also with a full
band, The Adam Lufkin Band, comprised of musicians he has met over the years. Adam
has a few songs that he could release as a single, though he does have it narrowed
down to a couple. Lufkin teased ION Indie Magazine with the potential for a new single
release as early as this fall. Previously, Adam released the full-length album, The Miami
Sessions in 2016, and the single, Home Town.
Lufkin’s stage presence brings no shortage of energy to the crowd. Bernie’s Beach Bar
in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, was socially distanced as Adam performed with
his full band on the Fourth of July. The tables were six feet apart, but people were still
swaying in their seats singing along to Lufkin’s beats, which are impossible not to move
to. One thing was clear, Lufkin, has found his rhythm again.
