Facilities Terminology

Academic Support – Funds to provide support services for an institution's primary missions – instruction, research, and public service.

Assignable Area – The sum of all areas on all floors of a building assigned to, or available for assignment to, an occupant or use, excluding spaces
defined as building service, circulation, mechanical, and structural areas.

Average Weekly Classroom Hours of Instruction – A rate of the total number of classroom hours of instruction over the total number of

classrooms for each institution. Weekend hours of instruction are excluded from this calculation even for courses with section meeting times
on weekdays.

Auxiliary Enterprises – Activities that exist to furnish goods or services to students, faculty, or staff, and that charge a fee directly related to,
although not necessarily equal to, the cost of the goods or services are included in auxiliary enterprises. These entities are classified as self-

supporting.

Classroom Average Student Station – A rate of the total assignable area over the total number of student stations across all of an Institution’s
classroom space.

Classroom Hours of Instruction – The number of hours that each classroom is used for regularly scheduled classes.

Clock Hours of Instruction – The number of hours a course meets rounded to the nearest half hour per meeting time multiplied by the number of
weekdays the course meets.

Educational and General (E&G) – The educational and general operations of an institution, including instruction, research, public service,
academic support, student services, institutional support, operation and maintenance of physical plant, etc.

Hospitals – Activities associated with the patient care operations of a hospital. This category does not include instructional activities which may
take place in the hospital but which are more appropriately categorized in the instructional program.
