A total of 16,382 faculty members were reported as current staff by South Carolina public higher
education institutions for the Fall of 2019. 7,664 of these faculty members were full-time, teaching faculty

and the remaining 8,718 were reported in other faculty categories. Figure 9.2 shows the number of both
white and minority full-time, tenured or tenure track teaching faculty increased in Fall 2019 compared to Fall

2018. In contrast, Figure 9.3 shows the number of both white and minority full-time teaching faculty not on

tenure track decreased between Fall 2019 and Fall 2018
The Commission on Higher Education collects faculty data from the public colleges and universities

only during the fall semester. Various faculty characteristics are included in this report such as race/ethnicity

and gender. Faculty rank and tenure status are also reported allowing for trend analyses using these factors.
The CHE does not collect data on non-instructional staff members.

Note: Editions prior to the 2019 Statistical Abstract only reported data on full-time, teaching faculty
and used a salary conversion factor based on a discontinued performance funding measure. The salary

conversion factor used in this edition was constructed to align with the IPEDS nine-month salary conversion
factor. Salaries reported in this edition should not be compared to data in editions before 2019.
