Degrees Awarded
53,143 total degrees were awarded during the 2018-19 fiscal year. 26,605 of these were bachelor’s
degrees, 17,544 were other undergraduate level degrees, and 8,987 were graduate level degrees.
Business, management, marketing, and related support services remained the most popular academic
discipline (accounting for 17.6% of the total degrees awarded) followed by health professions and related
programs (accounting for 16.8% of the total degrees awarded). The division of degree attainment between
these two disciplines was not equally divided by gender. Men were more likely than women to receive a
business services degree (21.3% compared to 14.9%); while women were more likely than men to receive a
health professions degree (24.0% compared to 6.7%).
The Commission on Higher Education collects completion data from all South Carolina colleges and
universities once a year in late September. Completion data is a student record containing information about
the degree awarded and demographic information on the student. This data allows the CHE to track both the
overall trends in degrees awarded as well as analyze completions by academic disciple, degree level,
student race/ethnicity, and student gender.
