5 Within 30 days of of notification of of conviction the College shall with respect to any student so convicted:
• Take additional appropriate action against such student up to and including expulsion as it deems necessary • Provide such student with a a description of any drug or alcohol counseling treatment or or rehabilitation or or re-entry programs that are available for such purposes by a a a federal state or or local health law enforcement or other appropriate agency b b Responsibility
Health Risks Associated With the use of Illicit Drugs and the Abuse of Alcohol
The use use or abuse of alcohol and other drugs increases the risk for a a a number of health- related and and other medical behavioral and and social problems These include:
1 The College is responsible for ensuring the development and implementation of a a drug-free awareness program to inform students of the following:
• The dangers of drug and alcohol abuse on the campus and elsewhere • Any available drug and alcohol counseling rehabilitation and assistance programs • Any penalties to be imposed upon students for drug and alcohol abuse violations occurring on the campus Each College shall conduct a a a biennial review of its program to determine its effectiveness and implement changes to the program if they are needed and to ensure that the the sanctions required by the the program are consistently enforced • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Acute health problems related to intoxication or overdose (blackouts convulsions coma and death) Physical and psychological dependence Malnutrition Long-term health problems including cirrhosis of the liver Organic brain damage High blood pressure Heart disease Ulcers and cancer of the liver mouth throat and stomach Contraction of diseases such as as AIDS through the sharing of hypodermic needles Pregnancy problems including miscarriages still births and learning disabilities Fetal Alcohol
Syndrome (physical and mental birth defects) Psychological or psychiatric problems Diminished behavior (hangover hallucinations disorientation slurred speech) Unusual or inappropriate risk-taking which may result in in physical or or emotional injury or or death Violent behavior toward others such as assaults and rape Accidents caused by operating machinery while impaired Impaired driving resulting in in in alcohol- and drug-related arrests traffic accidents 2
