I should point out that the invention and deployment of
the scanning electron microscope permits the direct
viewing of metal surfaces and has put the transmission
electron microscope back to where it came from to look at
thin samples of tissue and stuff. The scanning
microscope came into wide use a few years after we
published our work. The methodology associated with
the interpretation of fracture surfaces has not changed,
just the method of preparing and viewing fracture
surfaces.
DON’T PISS OFF THE UNION
We were building subscale pressure vessels (16’ diameter)
to evaluate new high strength steel and titanium alloys for
advanced rocket motor cases. Part of the fabrication
cycle involved “deep drawing” the forward and aft domes
that sealed off the test vessels. The hydroform machine
used for forming the domes was located at our Torrance
facility, while the bulk of our experimental work was
being performed in Santa Monica. When traveling
locally on company business we usually checked out a
company car, rather than going through the hassle of
using our own cars.
