>Bob Z: With face turning slightly red “Bruce exhibits no
respect for management, speaks his mind no matter the
audience, and dresses like a Hippie!-- including those
damned sideburns and long hair!”
>Me: “So?”
>Bob Z: “I want this layoff list to include his name! Will
you take care of that?”
>Me: “I’m sorry Bob, but I will not do that.”
>Bob Z: Raising from his desk, all 6’2” and 230 lbs. of
him, with a very flushed face, he yelled, “Ben, you are
being cowardly and expressing poor management skills.
Bruce does not belong in this organization! You are also
being insubordinate and not following my instructions,
and ----.“
Bob Z’s tirade continued for about five minutes, mostly
pointing out many of my shortcomings as a manager. I
was not being brave sitting there like a rock, I just did not
know what else to do when facing a very large, angry
manager. So, I just sat there, watched the performance,
and prayed that it did not turn physical as Bob was a big,
