started slewing the sight back and forth and up and down
to make sure the turret was following the gunsight. It was
OK. I happened to see a moving tanker truck on the ramp
about half a mile away that was moving across my field
of vision. I figured that would make a good target to track
once I engaged the computer to make sure the guns led
the target properly.
I tracked the truck, clicked the computer switch and
watched the guns move smartly to lead the truck. I then
pressed the triggers to see if the gun chargers worked.
There was plenty of air pressure to operate the chargers.
NADA!!! Damn it!—that meant I had to unscrew the
wing nuts that held the heavy aft pressure bulkhead so I
could access the guns and see what was wrong. All I
would have to do was to make sure the circuit breakers
were properly reset for the gun chargers. It was already
getting too hot in the gunner’s confined space. I removed
the aft pressure bulkhead and peered into the turret.
OMG!! There were three belts of 50 caliber ammunition
loaded into the bolts of all three guns. The only thing that
prevented the guns from firing was the fact that the circuit
breakers on all three gun chargers had popped, and made
the chargers inoperable.
