embraced Phil and me, took us to his palatial home to
shower, met his family, and took us out to one of the
fanciest restaurants in LA for a feast. A very unusual way
to make friends.
As a postscript, the heat of material that cracked during
forging was thoroughly evaluated back at our mill, and
we could find nothing wrong. The chemistry, mechanical
properties, microstructure, and processing history was
well within the bounds of specifications. This was one
failure we never got our arms around.

In the late 1950’s there was an incredibly major
investment by NASA and the US government to begin
development of a Mach 3 supersonic commercial
transport. Boeing, Douglas and General Dynamics were
the key players, and all were under contract to evolve
designs for this leap forward in commercial transport
technology.
The titanium producers, also taking part in the US
government’s largess, were trying to develop high
strength titanium alloys that were more amenable to
