If you go to the headland at Cabo and look out towards Islas Hormigas, there are several underwater volcanic mount reef sites. These include Testa, Piles and Dentro extending to the island, and beyond are Fuera and Medio. The best part is that all these sites are within a marine reserve within. Therefore, no fishing or other damaging activities are allowed,
Ed Smith and Peter Thomson, with the iconic Cabo de Palos lighthouse in the background
(including winkling out lobsters which aren't accepted anywhere with recreational scuba diving nowadays). The result is
that the reefs are teeming
with fish, crustaceans and all marine life, plus are exceptionally clear of litter.
The diving is therefore tightly controlled and has to be arranged in advance. It's handled by the Cabo dive shops, but Scuba Murcia works well with them and will arrange several slots on the large dive vessels. Any of these reef divesinside the marine
park are well worth a dive or two on your holiday, despite being slightly more expensive than others. By the way, when you see a helicopter or fast vessel heading out there, someone hasn't got permission to bethere.
