These “street friends” are allowed to pay any amount they can afford that meant as low as 5 cents if they
wish to. They have to queue to collect their meal, and they are also allowed as many refills as they wish,
but once they leave the line, they will have to finish their food and queue again.
Besides that, the environment of the place is very clean and comfortable. The café operates from
an old three-storey shophouse along Jalan Tun HS Lee. The décor is kept simple – white painted walls,
exposed concrete floors and wooden furniture. It’s to avoid the homeless people to feel lonely, because
white colour painted wall brings out peace. Each street friend will be handed a plastic bowl and spoon
and move towards the line to select their food; porridge or bean soup or bread.
Pit Stop cafe is not only just a cafe but a community cafe where they provide special services
for the homeless people. They provide safety such as rooms to stay for their “street friends”. They also
provide toiletries, clean clothing and many other more daily usages for free if they need it. Besides
external help, they also provide healthcare for their “street friends” by giving them medical care if
needed.
They offer warm, nourishing meals to anyone in the neighbourhood who needs them, from the
man who barely makes a living as a security guard down the road to the teenagers who’ve been living on
the streets nearby for months. Pit Stop Cafe also accepts funds from private and corporate contributors.
Every time you dine in their cafe, you can help to fund their operations by contributing suspended
meals for their “street friends”.
