Correlative conjunctions are conjuctions that come in pairs. They get their name
from the fact that they work together (co) and relate one sentence element to another.
They relate two different nouns/noun phrases, adjectives or actions.
Correlative conjunctions include pairs like :
• either....... or.........
• neither........ nor......
• both......... and........
• not only....... but also........
Examples :
• I want either the cheesecake or the frozen hot chocolate.
• Neither the money nor the jewelry was stolen.
• Jim failed both chemistry and physics.
• George spoke not only to him, but also to me.
• Either you will confess, or I will complain to your boss.
• You failed not only chemistry, but also physics.
• He is neither dependable nor trustworthy.
• Not only is he dependable, but he is also trustworthy.
• I do not write Arabic, nor do I speak it very well.
• Dolphins are not only friendly, but also intelligent animals.
TASK : Choose the correct form of the verb in the following sentences.
1. Neither Mary nor the other girls ( is/are ) going to the play tonight.
