Many, many happy returns to Govind. Seventy years! University, was so many years ago!
I went back last year for the 150th anniversary of the Girton College, the
first residential women's college for higher education in the U.K. and gave the Founders' Memorial Lecture and was invited to become an Honorary Fellow, a great honour. Memory-wise, I may have remembered some things incorrectly, but I remember you announcing one day that you had decided to have an arranged marriage, and that you were engaged to a girl who was, I think, 16 or 17 at that time. You said that your father had told you that you were free to choose someone, but that having spent some time looking around at girls in the UK, you felt that there was no one really suitable, and that it would be better to ask your father to choose someone. I think that you also asked me whether I would help you choose a shade of lipstick (?) or some other cosmetic that I thought would be appropriate as you had little experience in buying that sort of thing. You wanted to take her back a gift when your returned to India for your holidays.
Sadly, I was not able to attend the wedding, because I do not know whether you remember, but we were supposed to sleep a certain number of nights in Cambridge to make up a term.
