Chapter Two:
ALL ABOUT PSORIASIS
For centuries, psoriasis was
considered a dirty disease.
Often confused with leprosy,
those afflicted with the scaly,
bleeding scabby sores of
psoriasis were often shunned
from society for fear that their
condition was contagious. It
wasn’t until the 1800s when {20}
scientists realized that psoriasis
was not contagious. No one
really knew anything about
autoimmune disorders back then, so they still didn’t know what was causing
these painful outbreaks on the skin. But at least they knew that coming into
contact with someone with psoriasis did not mean you would fall victim to the
condition too.
Unfortunately, the stigma associated with the disorder still did not go away. Even
today, almost 300 years after the first doctors announced that psoriasis was not
contagious, many people still shy away from close contact with its victims.
Maybe they still fear contacting the disease, or maybe they emotionally feel
uncomfortable with its victims because it looks so nasty. Either way, those who
suffer with debilitating psoriasis are left feeling abandoned and in the worst
cases, even worthless.
