12 The Armenian Church
highlight those specific features of the Ar-
menian Church that ensure its identity and
spell out its particular mission in the world
Christendom in general, and in the life of
the Armenian people in particular. Hence,
this book is an introduction to Armenian
Christianity; as such it provides an overview
of the Armenian Church's history, faith, and
witness, and sets out a vision for its future.
The book is addressed to anyone eager to
learn about the history and current condi-
tion of the Armenian Church. It is descrip-
tive rather than analytical, and this con-
ditions its scope and style. Each chapter
focuses on a characteristic aspect of the
Armenian Church. In order to ease the
reader’s way, I have not burdened the book
with notes and references. I have however
included appendices, which contain addi-
tional information and clarify issues of par-
ticular importance. I have also attached a
selected bibliography for further reading.
I have used the Hubschmann-Meillet trans-
literation system to render Armenian proper
names and key words into the Roman
alphabet.
I would like to express my warm thanks
and deep appreciation to Dr. Joe Pirri
and Ms. Teny Pirri-Simonian, Professors at
Webster University in Geneva, Switzerland
for their comments and editorial sugges-
tions. My great appreciation is also due
