My Town
The value of living in a caring community cannot be overstated. Various scenes depict a vibrant town where everyone
feels a sense of responsibility and contributes to its welfare. Emphasis is on the people of the town and how they care
                       for each other.
Values: Gratitude and understanding the importance of people caring for each other in a community
Suggested Family Topic: Talk about the people in your community who go out of their way to be of help. Talk about
the different way your family has already contributed to the community. What other ways could you contribute to
your town? Do you know any of the sponsors of My Favorite Book?

                       Family
The value of a loving family, be it a traditional or a blended family, reaches across all cultural boundaries. Traditions
from all over the world have blended into our American culture. Each member of each family is a singular individual,
no matter their age, their looks, their country of origin, their position in the family or their special needs.
Values: The importance of familial love and acceptance, the importance of heritage and tradition, the
appreciation of cultural diversity, the appreciation of the value of each and every individual, the appreciation
of our nation and its freedoms.
Suggested Family Topic: Tell some favorite family stories. Talk about your family roots. Use this opportunity to
teach your child the Pledge of Allegiance. Talk about families you know who have members with special needs and
how important it is to treat people with special needs fairly and compassionately.

                       Trouble!
Sometimes the simplest lessons are the hardest to teach. Learning to follow rules is essential for the well being of our
children. When a person in authority, such as a parent or guardian, formulates a set of rules, it is important for the
                       child to obey them.
Values: How following the rules can keep us safe, the definition of poison, the connection between following
the rules, poison and the ingestion of harmful substances such as alcohol and other drugs, the importance of
                       parental authority.
Suggested Family Topic: Talk about the specific rules in your home concerning harmful substances. What are some
of the rules you follow in your daily life?

                       Be Good to Your Body
The importance of good health, hygiene and nutrition are emphasized in delightful verse.
Values: The importance of a healthy mind and a healthy body.
Suggested Family Topic: Talk about what each family member could do to eat a healthier diet. What kind of
exercises can you do as a family? How much time do you spend in front of the television?
