MIDDLEBOROUGH
HOUSING
AUTHORITY
The Middleborough Housing Authority respectfully
submits this report to the Town of Middleborough for the
year ending December 31, 2024. The Middleborough
Housing Authority (MHA) continues its endeavors to
provide decent, safe and sanitary housing for low to
moderate income residents. MHA provides 382 families
with afordable rental housing through our 5 housing
complexes, state & federal voucher programs and through
the 40B/40R afordable housing programs. MHA's main
priority is to make afordable rental units available to
persons of low to moderate income; to promote
home-ownership housing opportunities; and to endeavor
to meet local afordable housing needs through
community partnerships.
In 2024 we completed new roofs at our Archer Court
family development as well as the remaining roofs
of two buildings at our Nemasket Apartments
Community Building.
With grants from the Executive Ofice of Elder Afairs, we
continue to partner with our Resident Services Coordinator
that assists our elderly tenants with many daily needs. She
may assist them with paperwork, make referrals for home
care aides, or schedule group activities. Farmer's markets
provide fresh fruits & vegetables. Special events such as ice
cream socials, cofee hours, bingo & art classes are
available to provide our residents with social activities and
hopefully improving their quality of life.
With the grant, each year MHA continues to provide
all residents with grocery store gits cards and free GATRA
bus passes.
In 2025, we will be adding new parking spaces to our
Nemasket development as well as a new maintenance
storage shed and additional parking spaces to the
Riverview development.
As rental and home ownership continues to be cost
prohibitive for many families, we will be partnering with
new developers to provide families with afordable 40B
rental and ownership opportunities. The 40B rental units
have maximum rent limits and the ownership units are
sold below the market rate price. This fantastic
ownership program allows 1st time homebuyers to
purchase a new home at a greatly reduced price. Coupled
with down payment & closing cost grants, it allows them
to purchase a home that is afordable. Without these
types of programs, many of our young families would be
priced out of owning a home in their hometown. In the
past few years, MHA has assisted several families in
purchasing their first home through these Afordable
Housing programs.
As a new Director, our top priority continues to be
ensuring there is suficient afordable housing in our
community - afordable & safe housing will always be
needed, and we will continue to assist the Town in
meeting this need. Another goal is to remove all fossil
fuels by 2050 - we have already begun the process by
converting our gas stoves to electric. We also hope to
convert all developments to electric heat pump systems
from gas or oil heat but realize this will be a multiyear &
expensive process.
I extend my sincere appreciation to the MHA staf for
their dedication and commitment to continue to provide
a safe environment for our residents. I would also like to
thank our Chair, Richard Young and the Board of
Commissioners for their support. Special thanks to
Veronica Haywood for her ten years of service on our
Board. Working together we hope that we have been
able to ofer our tenants a safe, afordable & better
quality of life.
