FACILITIES
DEPARTMENT
I am pleased to present to you my
6th annual report for the Facilities
Dept. This year was a big year for
projects. January began with design
meetings for the new Peirce
Playground. Ater meeting with
local groups and with the Parks
Department blessing, we continued
to make improvement changes to
the design as well as ever evolving
ongoing eforts in locating funding
sources to create a destination
center for all age groups of children
(and adults) with all levels of
accessibility. June 18th was the
oficial ribbon cutting ceremony and
working on the design, logistics,
implementation and final product
was a highlight of the year for me.
This was truly a team efort and
many cost saving measures were
taken advantage of including using
in-house labor through DPW, Parks,
Ultiplay and Facilities. The Town
Manager, Commission on
Disabilities, Peirce Trust, Town Grant
writer, and Facilities and many
others came together to brainstorm
on creating an all-inclusive
playground for all to enjoy. Diferent
levels of physical ability and sensory
inclusion improvements were top
priority as well as finding solutions
to funding shortfalls to meet these
challenges and goals to create this
gem for the community. Thank you
to all that contributed and helped
see this project to completion.
Special Thank you to the Town
Manager for kicking of this project and
working tirelessly with me for more
funding as the project grew to what we
felt was a homerun for the people who
will be enjoying the playground. Also
very special thanks to the unoficial
community advocacy parents group
who were instrumental in the initial
planning concept and bringing this
cause to our attention.
The Town Hall cupola engineering work
is still ongoing. Engineering design
planning is evolving to include two
options of repair to bring before capital
planning and town meeting for funding
of repairs to correct the lean of the
tower. This engineering portion has
taken much longer than anticipated
and is in progress.
The old DPW site received a grant
which was put to use to remove the
hazardous materials on site since the
facility is no longer in use by DPW.
Facilities sought procurement and
Pasquazzi Brothers were selected to
demo the outbuildings along the

perimeter and the salt shed excluding
the main DPW ofice and attached
brick garage. Working closely with the
demo crew, we came in under budget
and were able to use remaining funds
to remove the asbestos tiles and
remaining hazardous materials in the
main building, remove an
underground storage tank, and remove
the concrete slabs around the site as
well. Remaining grant surplus funds
were spent to empty out the decades of
obsolete parts, equipment and trash
ater auction items were finished. We
got a lot more done than originally
planned with the grant allowance.
Thank you to Bill Kenney from
Riverhawk environmental for assisting
me in the challenges of removing
hazmat sources so close to the
proximity the Nemasket River. It was a
challenge that went of with incident.
The sitework done at this phase made
preparations for a planned upcoming
new home for the grant funded
skatepark and recreation facility still in
planning phases.
