2024 REPORT OF THE
SELECT BOARD
In 2024, the Town of Middleborough demonstrated
remarkable productivity and success. The Town secured
a substantial Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA) SAFER Grant in the amount of $2,019,303,
which facilitated the recruitment of six new
firefighters, marking the largest recruitment event in
recent memory. This grant will enable South Street
Station to be fully stafed and operational to meet the
needs of the Town.
In addition to these achievements, former Deputy Police
Chief Robert Ferreira assumed the role of Police Chief
following the retirement of Police Chief Joseph Perkins ater
35 years of remarkable service. Transitioning from the school
department, Josh Porter was newly appointed as the Town’s
Director of Mental Health. The Town also welcomed
Michele Coyle as the new Administrative Assistant to the
Select Board. We extend our warm welcome to all the new
employees who joined the Middleborough team this year,
and we eagerly anticipate the exceptional quality of service
they will provide to our community.
Additionally, the Town approved a Tax Increment
Financing (TIF) Agreement with REXA, Inc. This $33M
project promises to foster the community’s growth,
creating 25-50 permanent jobs while retaining 100
existing positions and generating additional revenue
for the town.
Throughout 2024, fiscal responsibility remained a
cornerstone of the town’s eforts. Middleborough maintains
a stable AA bond rating from S&P Global Ratings.
The Town began a new annual program installing
Remembrance Trees on the Town Hall front lawn for
the holiday season. On New Year’s Eve, the Town
hosted its inaugural “Celebrate Middleborough” event,
complete with a bonfire, noise parade and fireworks,
providing an enjoyable experience for all residents.
At Fall Special Town Meeting, the Town voted to refrain from
taking action on MBTA Multi Family Zoning, MGL. 40A, 3A, a
mandate that requires commuter rail communities to adopt
zoning districts that permit multi-family housing by right.
The Select Board remains committed to prioritizing the
well-being of Middleborough residents.
