together, how privacy issues are addressed, how spaces of different func ons are inhabited, how housing projects relate to their immediate urban surroundings, and how

newal, Konak Municipality had determined to improve the housing quality at Beştepeler neighborhood; one of them is the proposed site loca on for this semester project.
Konak cons tutes the historical core of Izmir, where tradi onal Kemeral Bazaar, Damlacık tradi onal housing area, Smyrna archeological excava on area (Mezarlıkbaşı) RH C
and Kadifekale (Pagos) castle are located in. The proposed area was first the neighborhood to house the immigrants from lost O oman lands such as Crete island and Bal-
kans. It was a planned district to se le these people, then the sociological background has changed. The original se lers have moved to the other parts of Izmir, and today, /A /
most of the residents are from Mardin with few refugees from Syria. Even if the land is very advantageous with is loca on closer to city center in Konak-Clock Tower, it 0

has lack of social service & car park areas and green spaces with poor building quality and narrow streets.

Beştepeler neighborhood also serves minimum opportuni es for disadvantageous groups such as women, children, teenagers, young genera on and elderly people. Izmir
Municipality developed an urban regenera on master plan in Konak including Konak-Beştepeler region. The developed design proposes more green areas, be er street R
loca ons, recrea on places, and be er service facili es. It proposes new loca ons of residen al buildings where the base buildable allowed area is 50% of the total giving A
land. The housing proposal is standard towers that have a height range of 10 floors.
At the end of the semester, each student is expected to develop an understanding of:
- Housing as one of the fundamental cons tuents of the urban fabric
- Levels of privacy and publicness
- Building orienta on, site planning, and landscaping
- Sec on and plan development for a rela vely complex architectural program
- Environmental, economic, and social factors under the sustainable umbrella concept
