The Dire Wolves That Aren’t
The wolf pups, twisted into playful shape, sniff the camera’s eye while golden lamps
anoint the twins with shine. “Only twenty edits,” gushes the nearby geneticist, but that leaves
over twelve million differences across ten thousand years, give or take
a wayward bitch. The delighted reporter offers de-extinction and revived niche
for the boys in white coats to lick up and bark back as a Nobel cause
even as the small brothers shiver and yowl for their sister, the only pack they have.
No one anticipates the zoo where they will live forever without a chance to flash through savannas
or the ways their altered blood will likely fail in between injections. Otherwise designed
but still so basically grey, they feel the press release bearing down and huddle as they may.
