installation, (approx 84” x 10’ × 18’ with varying horizontal floor measurements); multiple plywood constructed modules attached with bark or twigs (fictionalized tree stumps) surrounded by hand- shaped tree bark pieces. Solo exhibition at McLain Project for the Art, McLain,VA.
“During frequent walks in the woods, I note surrounding phenomena: grow- ing, evolving, and decaying of the wooded environment. For closure, I
make sculptures to define these perceptions; these constructions are fictions of trees, stumps, and logs—not renderings but reinterpretations of living forms. The imagery is abstracted, altered to achieve an accommodation for installation; place- ment with other constructed modules which allude to the abuses of the forest. During the study of felled trees on family property in Catuctin Mountains, MD, I collect shed tree parts and, in my studio, attach them to a constructed plywood armature. This rumination and reconstruction imparts an understand of how the trees are dismembered; how they decompose into the ground; how vertical ele- ments of the structure morph into the horizontal ground.”
