How did people count things before there were
numbers? Before there were numbers, when people
wanted to count something they put other objects

to use objects that were easy to find like sticks and

lots of things, so people started to write down how
many there were and that’s where numbers came from.
There are signs that people in the Inca Empire in South
America counted things by tying knots in differently
colored strings, and people in Europe and Africa made
marks on animal bones.
Think about how we would count things today if we
didn’t have numbers.
