Moby Dick is one of the most famous novels in the world. It is the story of
Captain Ahab‟s hunt for a white whale. But 100 years ago, its author, Herman
Melville, was almost unknown. Born in 1819 in the United States, Melville went to
sea as a young man. He wrote stories based on his time at sea.
His greatest novel, Moby Dick, was published in 1851. It did not sell well.
Melville wrote many other books too, but he was not considered a great writer in
his lifetime. He earned a living as a customs officer in New York.
After his death in 1891, Melville was forgotten for many years. Then, in the
20th century, Americans started reading Melville again. Moby Dick amazed
readers. Suddenly, Melville was famous, long after his death.
