What are water plants?
Many plants grow on land. Daisies and roses grow on land. These plants only
need a little water. Some plants need much more water. They grow in the water.
They are water plants. A spatterdock is a water plant.
What is a spatterdock?
Home: Spatterdocks are plants. They grow all over Florida. They grow in
ponds, lakes, and slow rivers.
Leaves &Flowers: Spatterdocks have big, green leaves. We can see the leaves
on top of the water. There are small, round flowers, too. They are yellow. We
only see the leaves and flowers of spatterdocks. But the whole plant is very big.
Stems &Roots: There are very long and thick stems under the water. They are
6 feet (1.8 meters) long! Spatterdock stems grow roots under the water. The
roots are much shorter than roots on land plants.
Use: For many years, Americans used spatterdocks for cooking. Some people
still use them today. They make food. They cook the seeds. They boil the roots.
