Activity 1 Comparing Numbers
jOb ective Compare 3-digit numbers.
1. Textbook Instructions Activity 1 Comparing Numbers
Explain how to compare 3-digit numbers. 1 Count the number of items.
Compare the numbers and write > or < in the .
a 100 100 100 100
1. Have students use the models to express 10 10 10 100 10
3-digit numbers in the following way.
235 < 317
When comparing 2 numbers, cancel out
the same amount found in both models. b 100 100 100
Then, compare the remaining values to
compare 2 numbers. 100 100 100
1a. The following is an example lesson of 100 100 10 10 100 100 10 10
how students can use models to compare 2 10
numbers.
How many baseballs are there in each 532 > 525
picture? 235 and 317.
How many baseballs are left after
canceling out the same amount in both
pictures? 20 and 102.
2 Compare the 2 numbers marked with dots on the number lines.

Signs of Inequality
Compare the value of 249 with 242.
Before students use signs of inequality to compare and express 2 numbers, have them express the signs in
words and say, “249 is greater than 242.”
Then, have them write the sentence using the sign of inequality, 249 242.
In the same way as mentioned above, have the students say, “242 is smaller than 249.”
Then, have them write the sentence using the sign of inequality, 242 249.
