Leonhard Euler, a minister’s son, was born in
Switzerland in 1707. Like his father, Euler entered
a seminary to become a minister, but Euler’s
passion for math led him to leave the seminary and
devote his life to the study of mathematics. Euler
was extremely talented in math.
When he was 28 years old, Euler was able to solve
a math problem in just three days that other
mathematicians struggled with for months.
Unfortunately, Euler lost his eyesight, perhaps Leonhard Euler (1707-1783)
because he studied too hard or because of an
illness. But he never gave up math.
In fact, he spent his whole life doing math.
Euler was such a great mathematician that another famous mathematician,
F. Arago, once said, “Euler calculated without any effort, just as men breathe
and eagles fly.”
Euler also had a photographic memory, so he was able to do calculations in
his head involving 50-digit numbers.
