The development of shape recognition in children occurs in the following stages.
Before the age of 4: shapes with a similar form like below cannot be identified whether they are same or
different.
After the age of 4: when comparing more than 2 shapes, children will gradually focus on the differences of
characteristics in shapes. The most common distinction in shapes is the number of sides, and the number of
corners, line of symmetry, length of sides, size of angles, and parallel and perpendicular sides will also be
observed.
