Unit 1 The Old Glass House
Listening Comprehension
Hundreds of years ago, people from Europe arrived in America. There, they
built a town. The town had a glass house. No, it was not made of glass! It was
where people made glass!
The town was next to a river. There were beaches with clean sand. People
melted sand with a very hot fire. Then they made glass from the melted sand.
Someone took a long pipe and put one end in the melted glass. A blob of melted
glass formed out of the end of the pipe. Then the person blew very hard into the
pipe‟s other end. The blob of glass turned into a bubble! The melted glass cooled
and turned hard. Then the bubble became a bottle!
The glass house was very important. People needed bottles to hold drinks.
Cans were far in the future then!
