Basic Concepts Comparing Fractions

When comparing fractions with the same denominator, the fraction with
the greater numerator is greater. When comparing fractions with the same
numerator, the fraction with the smaller denominator is greater.

3 6 , 6 6
7 7 13 8

When comparing fractions that have different numerators and
denominators, change the fractions such that either the numerators or
denominators are equal. Then, compare the fractions.

21 2 12 22 21
35 3 52 3 10 35

23 25 33 10 9 23
35 35 53 15 15 35

When comparing proper fractions having the same differences between
the numerators and denominators, the fraction with the greater numerator
and denominator is greater.

Example Write the following fractions in order from greatest to smallest.

11 6 2 13 4 16
16 11 7 18 9 21

Class Notes

The fractions above have the same dif ferences between the numerators and
denominators:

When comparing fractions with the same dif ferences between the numerators and
denominators, the fraction with the greater numerator and denominator is

.

Therefore, if you write the fractions in order from greatest to smallest, you get,

Try It Again Write the following fractions in order from smallest to greatest.
