5 Deduction Tables
Basic Concepts Deductive Reasoning
Deductive reasoning uses premises and logic to reach a conclusion. The
most used form of deductive reasoning is syllogism.
All humans are mortal.
Socrates is a human.
Conclusion: Socrates is mortal.
Example Among the following, find the conclusion that is incorrect.
All cats are wild. All mammals drink milk.
Tom is a cat. Whales are mammals.
Conclusion : Tom is wild. Conclusion : Whales drink milk.
Terry is faster than Sarah. Lions are scary.
Ryan is faster than Terry. Leo is a leopard.
Conclusion : Ryan is faster than Sarah. Conclusion : Leo is scary.
Class Notes
The following syllogism is not correct because lions and leopards are dif ferent types of
animals.
Lions are scary.
Leo is a leopard.
For the conclusion to be true, the phrase must be changed to ‘ are scary’ or ‘Leo
is a .’

Flowers smell nice.
Roses are flowers.
