B FOCUSING THE TOPIC
Some topics are too big to write about in one short essay. To focus your
topic and make it into a STRONG IDEA, ask yourself a few questions:
• Is my topic focused enough for a short essay?
• Could my topic be smaller than it is?
• What smaller ideas can I find in my big idea?
EXAMPLE Look at the broad topic and the STRONG IDEA below.
