There is a big holiday in November in the United States. It‟s Thanksgiving! It‟s a
national holiday and a time for families to get together. Often, they have a big meal
on that day. They usually eat roast turkey and many other foods.
Thanksgiving is also important for business, because it starts the Christmas season.
The season is between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and American companies make
much of their money for the year then. Thanksgiving is important for both the
economy and the family in the US!
Who had the first Thanksgiving in America? Americans tell the story of the Pilgrims
and the “first Thanksgiving.” The Pilgrims were a religious group from England. In the
story, they had the first Thanksgiving in 1621 in Massachusetts.
The story is famous, but it is not true. In fact, America had Thanksgiving events
before 1621. The Spanish in Florida had a Thanksgiving feast in 1565. English people
in Virginia had a Thanksgiving event in 1619. People are not sure about the first
Thanksgiving, but the Pilgrims were not the first to have Thanksgiving. They were not
even second!
