Because the length of each person’s foot is different, we cannot
make accurate measurements. How can we measure things
accurately?
Where Feet Came From
A long time ago in Rome, people did not have 1 foot
units to measure objects. They used parts of
their bodies instead.
But the sizes of each person’s body parts were
different.
The emperor had a good idea.
From now on, the basic unit of
length will be the length of my
foot, from the back of my heel to
the front of my toes.
People were happy.
The basic unit was the length of a person’s foot. This is how we began
to use the unit, “feet.” 1 foot is about 30 cm.
